Botan Rice Candy is an odd find with a light, citrus taste. This candy comes to us from Japan by way of the JFC International company, which is currently a subsidiary of Kikkoman, though it was a standalone company in 1906. It's one of the most affordable candies out there, and can be found at Walmart in the Asian food aisle. What's weird about it is that the candy itself is double wrapped. The first layer is a disposable plastic wrapper, but the second wrapping? Look at the above picture. It "looks" like another sheet of plastic, but guess what? IT'S RICE!! It's a combination of rice and glucose syrup made to look like a secondary candy wrapper. The rice wrapper is flavorless and flakes off of the candy, but is actually edible. Past the rice wrapper is a chewy, reddish pink candy with a light lemon and orange flavor. It's a feint taste and is not too sweet or too sour. Each box has about 4-6 pieces of candy and a sticker. Curiously, my box came with a rubber band as well. The tickers are generic and are usually random drawings of food, robots, toys or animals. INGREDIENTS: Glucose syrup (corn starch, water), sugar, sweet rice, water, lemon flavor, orange flavor, FD&C Red No. 40 |
